Walvis Bay

Day 03: Lunch and Flamingos

After breakfast we began our 35 minute commute to the coastal town of Walvis bay. We took the same Storm watchers road as the day before...since that's what the sign said. "Walvis Bay →" We didn't really have an itinerary upon arriving, pretty much just lunch and find the flamingos and seals and explore the 11 square miles of the town.

Walvis Bay, home to our friends, Deldry and Charlie, was one of those towns that you ask, "So...What do people do here?" and at first, nothing comes to mind. But, much like the island we grew up on, the answer can't be nothing. Lack of a mall, arcades, hip scenes, concert halls and sporting events forces the youth to get into other kinds of shenanigans that can't be experienced anywhere else.

After lunch we went holo holo down the road that ran across the harbour. At first the bare shores were disappointing. While doing research before the trip we saw pictures where the water was filled with flamingos and seals. We were determined to find them.

The streets were eerily bare and there wasn't much color to be seen other than the deep blue of the harbour. Lack of visual stimulation almost caused us to turn around and head back to Swakopmond. But our persistence eventually paid off when we came across a small patch of shore teeming with flamingos.

We took our millions of pictures and began the drive back to the BON hotel. We drove off into the sunset on the opposite sides of the dunes. The colors both above the ocean and the dunes were amazing. I tried my best to coach Taryn to set up the camera to catch the scene but that didn't work out too well so we just had to pull over and get out.

We got back to BON in 45 minutes, hopped in the shower and ordered take out and wine for dinner. In the morning...it was 6 hours north to Etosha!
