Story Drive

Day 6: Do Not Exit Your Vehicle

In just three drives we had pretty much seen all the animals we wanted to. So this afternoon's drive was all about storytelling. We visited each waterhole as routine - driving by herds of zebra and impala, playing "who can spot a dik dik" first game and enjoying the afternoon sun.

Everyone in the jeep had been on the morning drive so we were all on the same page when it came to taking pictures and how much time we spent at each waterhole. Pretty lax, nobody really had any objectives for the afternoon. Peitrus, picking up our chilled out vibe decided to drive us to what he claimed was the elephants' favorite hangout spot. Once there, Peitrus poured us our afternoon beverages and began to tell us about his early days as a safari guide.

Most of the stories I'd categorize as horror stories. Moral of every story was DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE. Just a couple weeks before we visited, there was a man who was literally feet between life and death. A lion had snuck up behind him while he was taking a picture outside of his SUV. Luckily, Peitrus and his group had seen the lion and drove up near the man to scare it off. When they asked the man if he had seen any lions, the man shook his head and said, "No, sorry guys not today". #smh

Then just as Peitrus was telling a second story, this one about two elephants ransacking their campsite, a rather large male elephant began to creep up to the jeep. Luckily, all he did was cross the road. Can't ignore that stare down though...

At the end of the drive we drove back over the to no. 03's just as they were getting up to get a drink of water.

After taking a drink, the three lions went into what seemed like a hunting formation. Three across facing a lone impala who was frozen in its step almost as if he was too afraid to turn his back. Can you spot them? Also on the look out was this giraffe. We waited as long as we could to try to catch the lions in action, but ended up heading back to the gate before any hunting started.
